Research methodology

A benchmark needs enough data to protect the businesses behind it.

This is the publication standard for future quarterly software-spend research. No benchmark findings are published yet.

Privacy comes before a benchmark headline

30minimum consenting businesses in a published cohort
10minimum businesses in any reported subgroup

Thresholds are publication gates, not a claim about the current size of the BusinessAdvisor.Guide dataset.

BusinessAdvisor.Guide will only publish a quarterly benchmark from audit and outcome records when a participant has explicitly consented to research use. Product recommendations and rankings remain fit-first: benchmark participation, partner status, and commercial data are not ranking inputs.

What a future report may measure

A report may describe aggregated software spend, tool-count ranges, adoption patterns, and self-reported outcomes by broad industry and company-size bands. It will identify the reporting quarter, the included population, the measure definition, the cohort count, the date range, and material limitations. It will not represent a sample as a market-wide census.

30 businesses
minimum cohort before a finding can be published
Any industry, size band, or other subgroup needs at least 10 consenting businesses on its own. Smaller groups stay unpublished or are combined only when the combined label remains accurate.

Privacy and cohort controls

We will remove direct identifiers before analysis, retain only the fields needed for the stated measure, and publish aggregates rather than company-level records. We will not publish raw audit answers, company names, emails, vendor invoice details, account identifiers, or a table that makes a participating business reasonably identifiable.

We will suppress any cohort below 30 consenting businesses and any subgroup below 10. We will round published counts to the nearest five and will not publish cross-tabs when a reader could derive a suppressed subgroup from totals. Consent may be withdrawn before a report cutoff; the record will then be excluded from future reports where feasible.

A small or uneven sample is not a reason to lower the threshold. If a quarter cannot support a privacy-safe, useful finding, we will publish no finding for that segment.

Methods, corrections, and changes

Every published report will link to this methodology version, state its data cutoff, disclose changes from the prior report, and distinguish observed values from estimates. If we discover a material error, we will correct the report, add a dated correction note describing what changed, and retain a change-history entry. We will recruit independent subject-matter review before making findings in regulated or high-stakes categories.

Vendor payments, affiliate commissions, and commercial relationships are excluded from benchmark inclusion and analysis. If a publication mentions a partner, that relationship will be disclosed separately and will not change the aggregation method or reported ranking.

The first report will be published only after the consent, cohort, privacy, source-date, and change-history requirements on this page are met. Until then, no benchmark statistic should be inferred from this methodology.
